Javier Enrique García Villalba, a caqueteño biologist with a deep passion for nature, has dedicated a large part of his life to researching a unique primate species in the world: the titi from Caquetá (Plecturocebus caquetensis).

His fascination with these small primates began during his university studies in Bogotá, when he met the renowned primatologist Thomas Defler. Inspired by his mentor's work, Villalba decided to return to his homeland to explore the rich biodiversity of the Colombian Amazon and, in particular, to follow up on reports of a little-known primate in the region.

A historic discovery

It all began in 1976, when biologist Martin Moynihan left a clue about a new type of marmoset in this region of Colombia. Based on these notes, Villalba, and his team of researchers, began an exhaustive search in the forests of Caquetá. After years of patient observation and study, they confirmed the existence of a new species of marmoset. At first, they called it Callicebus caquetensis, but thanks to more advanced genetic studies, the scientists discovered that its correct scientific name was Plecturocebus caquetensis, which is how it is currently known. This small primate is characterized by its gray and red fur, and for not having the typical white stripe on the forehead that other marmosets have.

A critically endangered species

The titi from Caquetá is endemic to a small region of Caquetá, which makes it extremely vulnerable to threats to its habitat. Deforestation, hunting, and illegal crops have drastically reduced its population, bringing it to the brink of extinction. Despite its ecological importance, this species has been underestimated and little known.

A long road to conservation

The process of describing, naming, and classifying a new species is long and complex. Villalba and his team have spent years collecting data, analyzing samples, and writing scientific papers. However, the obstacles did not end there. Obtaining funding, dealing with bureaucratic red tape, and raising public awareness of the importance of conserving the species were additional challenges they had to overcome.

The importance to protect the titi monkey from Caquetá

The Caquetá titi monkey is a small primate with a great ecological importance, they find it critically endangered due to the loss of its habitat. Its disappearance would be an irreparable loss to global biodiversity. Scientific investigations have revealed that the Titi monkey from Caquetá is an excellent indicator of the health of Amazonian forests. To protect the species, we are protecting an entire ecosystem and contributing to mitigating the effects of climate change.

Each of us has a role to play in this struggle. We can support local organizations, reduce our consumption, and promote sustainable practices in our daily lives. Together, we can ensure a future more sustainable for the monkey from Caquetá and for future generations.
